Given the choice between staying clean and getting a job or going to prison, a hardened and heavily tattooed felon goes to work for a wealthy Palm Beach septegenarian in director/co-writer Dan Chinander’s tale of a most unlikely friendship. Victoria is all about attitude, and her Maori-like facial ink lets the world know that in no unconditional terms. Now forced to stand before a judge and plead for her freedom, the temperamental young rebel is forced to accept a position as a helpmate for Althea Jaffrey – an ageing woman whose elegantly refined image belies her open-minded belief system. Over the course of their time together, Victoria and Althea forge an unbreakable bond that finds the tough-as-nails twenty-something finally revealing the painful secrets of her dark past. On the surface these two may seem to share little in common, but they are kindred souls at heart and only through the power of Althea’s forgiveness will young Victoria learn to break free from the binds of her past. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A serious minded, yet down on his luck writer begrudgingly agrees to pen a horror novel in order to pay the bills, only to find inspiration from the most unlikely of muses in this literary horror comedy from director/star Anthony Brownrigg. Jim is an author with a reputation for penning stuffy scripts better suited to Masterpiece Theater than The Twilight Zone, and when his bills start to pile-up, his agent attempts to convince him to branch out into horror. But Jim views the genre with nothing but scorn, until the day he meets Victoria (Arianne Martin). Victoria may be undead, but she’s got some pretty vital ideas about how to reinvigorate Jim’s failing career. Now, as Victoria sets out to teach Jim the true meaning of horror by slaughtering his friends and family, his only of stopping the bloodbath is to convince his muse that he finally understands how to terrify the masses. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls

$12.71

Located in the south of the African continent and located on the Zambia/Zimbabwe border, the Victoria Falls are one of the world’s most amazing and impressive wonders of nature.Between February and March when the Zambesi is at its strongest, an average of more than five hundred million litres of water shoot over edge of the waterfall every minute. Indeed, the dimensions of the Victoria Falls beats all records: at an average height of ninety seven metres, the Victoria Falls are around one and a half times as long and also twice as high as the world famous Niagara Falls in North America.Dense tropical rain forests now cover the former basins of earlier waterfalls and have thus created vegetation that would not normally thrive in the surrounding area.According British explorer, David Livingstone, the waterfalls were such an incredible sightthat even passing angels would have been awestruck and amazed by their outstanding beauty.Even a century and a half after they were first discovered the majestic Victoria Falls are still one of the greatest natural spectacles in the world.Source: Travel Video Store

Victoria [Shadoks]

Victoria [Shadoks]

$12.78

Though initially recorded in the late ’60s and early ’70s, the tracks that make up Victoria’s sole release didn’t see wide release until nearly 30 years later, seeing a further re-release on Shadoks in 2005. Consisting of a small limited-edition album and a variety of further cuts from tape and acetate, Victoria’s appeal lies perhaps most in the sextet’s ability to get a lot out of limited resources. Opening cut “Peace” is almost surprisingly lush and detailed, triumphant brass parts mixing in with the exultant rock & roll from the band. From there the 15 songs on the CD wend their way, ranging from gentle contemplation to fuller-bodied affairs, less fried psychedelia than the kind of widescreen pop that coexisted with it. The exact lineup of the band is unclear — only four people are credited, not all of whom appear to have performed at the same time — but one Greg Ruban was the core songwriter and arranger, and it’s his ability to capture his band surprisingly well that ensures Victoria is more than simply a rare curio. In ways he simply reflects his time — “Gevaro” sounds like a lost cut by contemporary Santana, while the proto-prog of “Village of Etaf (Prelude and Overture)” goes on a touch too long in the end. Throughout, singers Maureen Deidelbaum, Cherryl Simpson, and Sharon Barton — or some combination of them — acquit themselves well enough. One of their best efforts is one of the quietly wittiest — “Never Knew Blues,” the title of which is both somewhat descriptive (the descending blues influence is mostly heard in the verses) and an apt section of lyric. Intriguingly, some of the best tunes never made the original LP release — “Mister Let Me Go” is a lovely piano-led country song à la the Band, while the autoharp-led “Wheels” feels almost like a cousin to the third Velvet Underground album thanks to the murky rhythm section and steady rumbling pace. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi

La Victoria

La Victoria

$11.18

On a brash and fiery collection whose triumphant power lives up to the disc’s title, beloved Latin vocalist Cali Aleman has unpacked the hot salsa styles of Colombia and Puerto Rico — not to mention the hip street swagger of New York City — for a thrilling album that reunites the Grammy-nominated singer with the famed Original Latin All-Stars (“Macarena,” “I Like It Like That,” “Oye Como Va”). The nonstop dance vibe includes a scorching updated version of the biggest-selling salsa single of all time, “Torero,” written by Grammy-winning songwriter and arranger Nino Caicedo — who also contributes the dazzling title track. “Torero,” which sold 600,000 copies worldwide, was first recorded by Aleman’s Orquesta Guayacan and appeared on the 1993 album Los Batazos del Año. The Cuban-born and Miami-based Aleman, the true innovator of Spanglish songs in 1985 with “I Like It Like That,” has brought together many of the Original Latin All-Stars, including eight-time Grammy Award-winning percussionist Richard Bravo, four-time Grammy-winning pianist Quique Purizaga (who arranged the updated version of “Torero,” as well as “La Victoria”), and salsa trombonist Jorge Doval. The charming frontman describes La Victoria as an album of “nice colors and nice sounds,” but it’s more fun to imagine some crazy, salsa-fied dirty dancing — and lots of rising heat — going on as you listen. ~ Jonathan Widran, Rovi Performers: Ish Ledesma – Choir, Chorus; Bert Lavoy – Trombone; Cheito Quiñones – Choir, Chorus, Trumpet; David Karmiol – Guitar; Jorge Doval – Trombone; José Sibaja – Choir, Chorus, Trumpet; José Velázquez – Bass; Julio César González – Trumpet; Ramses Colón – Bass;

Victoria Day

Victoria Day

$11.98

Melissa McClelland is the wife of Canadian singer/songwriter Luke Doucet, the excellent guitarist who made his name in Sarah McLachlan’s touring band by embroidering her melodies without calling attention to his playing. Like her husband’s, McClelland’s music is rootsy, with touches of blues, jazz, country, and folk-rock. Since they’re Canadian you could call it Canadiana, but it has found favor on Americana stations in the U.S., and the American influences are all over the music and the arrangements. Doucet produced this set, McClelland’s third solo outing, and he brings the same attention to detail to his wife’s work that he brings to his own studio efforts. All of McClelland’s tunes have compelling melodies and a considerable lyrical flair. She opens the album with the laid-back rockabilly of “A Girl Can Dream,” which calls to mind the early Elvis Presley staple “Tryin’ to Get to You” with its loping beat and Doucet’s restrained solo. McClelland sings of a gal unlucky in love trying to mend her ways with a wistful grace. “God Loves Me” is a sad blues that tells the story of a backwoods party girl who flirts with disaster every time she picks up a man; McClelland’s understated vocal, an ominous guitar solo from Doucet, and sustained chords from Steve O’Connor’s big Hammond B-3 give the tune a moody feel. “Victoria Day (May Flowers)” is a jaunty ragtime tune about living beyond one’s means, with McClelland’s lively vocal laughing at the thought of the money running out. Doucet drops a swinging jazzy Texas-flavored solo while the horn section blares with abandon. “I Blame You” melds a simple ’50s rock & roll progression, mariachi horns, and the feel of a classic salon song. The playful rhythm section complements McClelland’s devil-may-care delivery of the lyric. “Seasoned Lovers” a duet with Ron Sexsmith, is a sultry tune of long-lasting love, the tale of a couple slowly driving each other crazy and loving every minute of it. “When the Lights Went Off in Hogtown” is a bluesy tune inspired by the Toronto blackout of 2003, and showcases McClelland’s surreal humor and Doucet’s Wes Montgomery-style solo. With players gathered from the couple’s touring bands, Doucet has no trouble getting a clean, precise sound that lets each tune shine and keeps the focus where it belongs, on McClelland’s luminous vocals. ~ j. poet, Rovi Performers: Johann Lotter – Viola; Luke Doucet – Lap Steel Guitar, Vocals (Background), Fender Rhodes, Banjo, Guitar (Acoustic), Piano, Guitar (Electric); Rich Levesque – Bass (Upright), Vocals (Background), Bass (Electric); Steve O’Connor – Organ (Hammond), Piano;

Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham

$11.89

As the new millennium dawned, Victoria Beckham — often portrayed as the sexy serious Posh Spice — remained a member of the hottest girl group of the ’90s, the Spice Girls. However, as the world moved into the 2000s, the members of the quartet, Beckham, Melanie Chisholm, Emma Bunton, and Melanie Brown, were all making solo arrangements and recording solo tracks. Therefore, it was no surprise when Beckham released a debut solo album in 2001. What’s interesting to note is that Beckham was often noted as the weakest singer of the girl group; her voice was often considered too wispy for solos when compared to that of Chisholm or Bunton. Therefore, many people were quite pleasantly surprised at the final product produced by Beckham and her support staff. Beckham certainly doesn’t fill her album with power ballads. Rather, she has no problem abusing the voice box and digitally enhancing her voice. The result is an electric — yet vapid — set, which sounds like a computer recording. Beckham isn’t a true artist on this album, and most of her personality is lost in the shuffle, yet the music is 100 percent enjoyable, with posh ballads (for lack of a better term), sweet uptempo songs, and bubblegum pop tunes that will have any girl or woman singing along in her bedroom. Most of the music blends together; the songs aren’t necessarily individual hits (with a few exceptions, such as “Not Such an Innocent Girl” and “I.O.U.”). In addition, many of the lyrics, when given a spoonful of attention, are laughable (“I’m not made of china, I’m not made of glass,” Beckham coos to her man, suggesting she needn’t be handled delicately.) Yet Beckham’s often sexy lower voice keeps the album coy and mature, and not in a creepy way (perhaps mindful of the young girls who idolized her from her days as a Spice Girl). In fact, the majority of the songs are of the same caliber as the lesser-known Spice Girls tracks. If one feels that Beckham isn’t trying to be a genuine artist, and that she is merely attempting to do her best as a singer, then this collection of over-produced yet strong songs is a pleasantly enjoyable set. However, as a full-fledged artist Beckham has failed, since her own songwriting is lacking and her voice is secondary to the music, which drowns her out in parts. It’s all about perspective. ~ Matthew Chisling, Rovi Performers: Bernadette Barlow – Vocals (Background); Chris Worsey – Cello; Ericka Yancey – Vocals (Background); Jeanette Olsson – Vocals (Background); Reiad Chibah – Viola;

Victor/Victoria [Blu-ray]

Victor/Victoria [Blu-ray]

$14.38

This filmed stage production of Victor/Victoria came to be through the collaboration of director Blake Edwards and his wife, singer and actress Julie Andrews. Andrews reprises her role as a female pretending to be a male who is impersonating a female, while Edwards once again directs. As with the 1982 film and 1996 Broadway productions of Victor/Victoria, Andrews’ character rises through the entertainment circuit by means of her unique gimmick, leaving a Chicago gangster and the rest of her audience thoroughly confused about her true sexuality and its implications. Filmed shortly before her vocal chords were unfortunately injured, this production of Victor/Victoria marks the last musical performance by Andrews prior to the damage incurred to her singing voice after undergoing subsequent surgery. ~ Tracie Cooper, Rovi

Victoria Railway Terminus: India

Victoria Railway Terminus: India

$12.71

At first sight the area around the Victoria Terminus is like one of London’s typical historic squares due to the many double-decker busses that can be seen.However, the chaotic hustle and bustle of the streets does not seem to be quite right.That is because this railway station is not in fact located in England but in India! The monumental building is one of the most impressive examples of Victorian Gothic architecture on the Indian sub-continent and from the initial planning stage it took ten years to build the station that is today called, Chhatrapati Shivaji.The station’s design gained much inspiration from London’s St.Pancras Station that had been completed in 1868.Although for most passengers tremendous hustle and bustle tends to get in the way of any architectural appreciation of the Victoria Terminus it is certain that for many years to come it will remain one of India’s most important and fascinating railway stations.
